ST. LOUIS - St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Edgar Renteria left the game in the sixth inning Monday with a strained muscle in his left side.

Renteria suffered the injury during batting practice, but didn't believe it was serious enough for him to miss the game.

"But it got worse and worse," Renteria said.

Renteria will not play at 7:10 p.m. today when the Cardinals begin a three-game series against NL Central rival Houston.

"Edgar is a hard-headed guy," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "He hadn't told the trainers or anything. He said his ribs have been little bit ouchy and didn't say anything."

Renteria drove in Tino Martinez with a double to right-center against Jimmy Haynes, giving the Cardinals a 6-0 lead in their 7-3 victory over Cincinnati. Renteria took third on the throw home.

The Reds made a pitching change, bringing in Carlos Almanzar. But before Almanzar worked to Placido Polanco, La Russa and trainer Barry Weinberg went to third after Renteria told third-base coach Jose Oquendo about the injury.

"He tweaked it there swinging and running, so I know he won't play tomorrow," La Russa said. "We'll see how he is the next couple of days."

Kerry Robinson ran for Renteria and scored one out later on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Eduardo Perez.

Right-hander Woody Williams, the winning pitcher Monday, suffered a pulled muscle in his left side April 5 in Houston and didn't return until Wednesday.

"That's why I was scared," Renteria said, noting the severity of Williams' injury.
