End Of The Slump

After matching his career-worst 0-for-24 hitless streak, Edgar Renteria snapped it with three consecutive two-out singles Thursday.

He grounded out in his first two at-bats to drop his average to a season-low .296, then hit RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings. He had another hit in the ninth.

"Renteria came back to life," Cox said of his All-Star shortstop, who hit .179 with three RBIs in his past 20 games before Thursday, after hitting .400 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 19 games before the skid.

Renteria predicted two hits or more before Thursday's game, after an encouraging morning session in the indoor batting cage with hitting coach Terry Pendleton.

"I've been pulling off pitches and pushing the ball, not hitting it," Renteria said. "It's just a small thing in my approach, where I move my head a little too much. I don't know why it happens. But today I felt good."
