WASHINGTON -- After fouling out as a pinch-hitter Tuesday, Edgar Renteria finds himself mired in the fifth-longest hitless streak of his 10-year big-league career.

The shortstop has not gotten a base hit in his last 17 at-bats and has seen his average drop to .300 from .313. Of the eight times in his career that Renteria has gone 17 or more at-bats without a hit, five have come in August.

Renteria was given Tuesday off by manager Bobby Cox, but the Atlanta skipper said that he had not seen signs of fatigue from his shortstop recently but instead was just giving the player a day to collect himself.

"It was just a little breather," said Cox about Tuesday's respite.

Renteria has been steady this season, putting up averages over .300 in four of the five months prior to August, something that Cox appreciates.

"He's been real consistent," Cox said, shaking his head.

Renteria is hitting .167 this month, well below his career August average of .299. The .299 career August mark is the second-best of any month for Renteria, 31, whose .310 career average in July is his highest of any month.
