MIAMI GARDENS - Before Tuesday, Edgar Renteria hadn't spoken this season with fellow shortstop and former Red Sox teammate Hanley Ramirez.
"I've been following him," Renteria said. "That's why I haven't called to bother him. If I would have seen him going bad and not doing the job, then I would have called."
Renteria and Ramirez became friends last spring training during Renteria's only season with the Red Sox. One of the organization's top prospects then, Ramirez renewed acquaintances with the veteran during a September promotion to the majors.
"He's happy how things are going for me," Ramirez said. "He's a good person. I learned a lot from him. Every day we would take grounders together early before batting practice."
As good as Ramirez has been, Renteria thinks the best is yet to come, saying: "Even if he doesn't have a great year this season, give him a couple of years and wait and see."
