MIAMI GARDENS - Atlanta Braves shortstop Edgar Renteria planned to have dinner this week with his good friend, Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez.

Among the topics Renteria planned to bring up: The 1998 Marlins, who lost a record 108 games during his final season in Florida.

Renteria said he hopes Ramirez continues to blossom in his rookie season without getting distracted because of the Marlins' struggles.

"I was in the same position. It was difficult for me because the year before we won (the 1997 World Series)," Renteria said.

"When you lose in anything, it's always difficult no matter if you're a young team or veterans. They have a lot of talent over there."

Renteria took Ramirez under his wing while they were Red Sox teammates in spring training 2005.

"I told everybody last year he can play," Renteria said. "He's getting to play every day and he's doing everything. He's got the talent. Now he has to continue to play every day."
