New shortstop Edgar Renteria is making an extravagant impact with his new club. Renteria established a career-best 23-game hitting streak on Sunday and has posted a hit in each of the 22 games he has played in this season.
His previous long streak came when he hit safely in 22 consecutive games during his 1996 rookie season with the Marlins.
Renteria got a hit in his last game with the Boston Red Sox last season. He is currently riding the longest hit streak of the 2006 season and is the eighth Atlanta player in team history to post a hit streak of 22 or more games.
"He's one of the best pure hitters I've ever seen," Braves catcher Brian McCann said. "He can handle the bat better than anybody. He's a professional hitter."
The Colombian leads the Braves with a .351 batting average and has two home runs and 12 RBI this season.
The longest hitting streak in team history is 31 games set by Rico Carty in the 1970 campaign.
