ATLANTA -- Braves shortstop Edgar Renteria sat out against the San Diego Padres on Sunday after suffering a strained left rib cage Saturday night.

Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said he expects Renteria to miss at least six days, but added "that may be wishful thinking."

Renteria suffered the strain in his first at-bat Saturday, according to MLB.com, but he remained in the game after his first-inning single that extended his major league-best hitting streak to 12 games.

Renteria left the game in the sixth inning after he struck out swinging.

Renteria missed six days during spring training with a similar injury, but if this strain is more severe, he might be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Braves trainer Jeff Porter hopes to make a better evaluation on the severity of the injury in a couple of days.

"We're going to wait a few days and see how it reacts," Braves head athletic trainer Jeff Porter told MLB.com. "After a couple of days, we'll have a better feel for how long we think it will be."

The Braves fear this latest strain is more serious than the one suffered this spring because he felt discomfort while swinging, rather than when moving out of the way of a deflected ball as he did in the first week of spring training.

"It's a different mechanism of injury this time," Porter told MLB.com. "Yeah, I am a little more concerned about it this time, because he did it swinging, and that's the typical way you do it. But you just don't know. He was pretty sore in spring training, too."
