New Braves shortstop Edgar Renteria reported to camp Tuesday a bit thicker in the arms and thinner in the waistline after a new winter workout regimen.
Traded from Boston after one disappointing season with the Red Sox, he hired a personal trainer and did more offseason conditioning than in past winters. He's ready to get to work with double-play partner Marcus Giles.
"The most important thing is communication, just talking every day," said Renteria, a four-time former All-Star in Florida and St. Louis and two-time Gold Glove winner. "We're going to be fine. Marcus has experience. Great player."
Renteria and Giles will start practicing together this morning when the Braves have their first full-squad workout.
"I don't expect it to take all spring, that's for sure," Giles said. "As easy as Fookie [Rafael Furcal] made it on me, I don't see it being any different with [Renteria]. It's just a matter of learning his tendencies. Just repetition."
