Cardinals shortstop Edgar Renteria - some day he will be their shortstop - thinks he aggravated his bruised right knee because of improper conditioning this winter.
"I worked but I didn't work right," Renteria said Wednesday. "I did something that I wasn't supposed to do - running and lifting weights. But I didn't know what was going on."
Renteria, who like center fielder Ray Lankford spends part of his days now running in swimming pools, hasn't been able to play in a game yet. But he said, his rehabilitation here "is going well so far."
Renteria was hurt sliding into second base in Los Angeles last August. He went on the disabled list and then was able to play only two games when he came back.
Asked when he thought he could play this year, Renteria said, "When they say, 'Play Ball.' September 5th."
Sept. 5?
"April 5th. Sorry," he said.
