ST. LOUIS -- If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Maybe that's what Edgar Renteria thought when he agreed to a four-year, $40 million contract with the Red Sox.

After six seasons with the Cardinals, Renteria is heading to the team that beat St. Louis in the World Series. He leaves behind an impressive resume, which includes four All-Star appearances and two Gold Gloves.

"The biggest reason was that Boston is a traditional team," Renteria told reporters in his home country of Colombia. "I played with [the Cardinals] for six years, but finally we didn't come to an accord."

Coupled with the departure of second baseman Tony Womack to the Yankees, the Cardinals are left looking for a new middle infield. The most obvious backup plan at shortstop would be to pursue Orlando Cabrera, the man Renteria is replacing in Boston. Cabrera has a Gold Glove of his own, and has spent all but 57 games of his eight-year career in the National League with the Expos.
