Cards Still Waiting On Renteria

Shortstop's status holding up other deals

ANAHEIM -- The Cardinals have prepared two scenarios for the upcoming days and weeks: one that includes All-Star shortstop Edgar Renteria, and one that does not. The former circumstance isn't getting any more likely.

General manager Walt Jocketty said Friday that a 45-minute conversation with Renteria's agent, Jeff Lane, yielded little progress toward a new contract for the two-time Gold Glover. Jocketty didn't characterize the session as particularly negative, but it wasn't exactly positive either.

"I wouldn't say necessarily that it was good or bad," Jocketty said. "I don't think we made any progress today. I think what's complicated is the fact that there are clubs that are jumping in that are starting to move the bid up. And we were afraid of that happening. And at some point we will be at a breaking point.

"We need to either find out whether we're gonna have Edgar or not, because we can't keep waiting and putting things off. We've got too many things that we have to try and do. So we're proceeding in two different directions, one with Edgar on the team and one with Edgar not on the team. And then we'll decide in the end what's the best direction to go in."

The Cardinals and Lane have exchanged proposals recently, with Lane making the newest counteroffer Friday. The two parties expect to meet again on Saturday.
