Owner Hopes To Revive Renteria Talks

Joe Strauss Of the Post-Dispatch

Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said he believes it possible the club and Jeffrey Lane, the representative for shortstop Edgar Renteria, could re-start negotiations before season's end.

Renteria, a pending free agent, turned down the club's offer of at least four years this spring.

Reminded that this spring's overture went nowhere, DeWitt said, "We are willing to negotiate."

"We'd certainly like to keep Edgar here. I think he likes it here and wants to stay here as well. It's certainly possible that we could make an effort to get something done before the end of the season."

Renteria is believed to be seeking a contract with an average annual value exceeding $10 million. He will be paid $7.25 million this season, the option year of his previous deal.
