Edgar Renteria was held out of the starting lineup on Friday because of continuing discomfort in his lower back. The All-Star shortstop was removed from Thursday afternoon's game in the eighth inning after experiencing pain. It's the second time in a week that Renteria hasn't started because of this condition.

"It got tight again," he said after Thursday's game. "There's nothing you can do."

The Cardinals are hopeful that Renteria can return to the lineup on Saturday, but La Russa said they will be patient.

"When a key guy is sore, you don't play him, because it's not worth risking it," he said. "If he's questionable, we'll just run Hector [Luna] out there."
