MONTREAL -- For the second straight day, Tony La Russa scratched half of his regular double-play combination for a game in Montreal. On Friday, second baseman Tony Womack was given a breather and on Saturday it was shortstop Edgar Renteria's turn.
"It's muscular, a tight back," Renteria said. "I've had two or three days like this and last night I felt it more and more, so that's why Tony took me out of the game. I feel loose enough to take batting practice today so it's no big deal."
The Gold Glove-winning shortstop was removed from the previous night's contest in the sixth inning.
"He's feeling better," La Russa added. "He's available in a real pinch. I'll try to avoid using him, but if push comes to shove and I have to play him later in the game, I will."
Womack, who had Tommy John surgery in the latter part of 2003, is dealing more with general aches and pains in his legs than any arm our shoulder issues.
"He throws his body around so much, he's always sore somewhere," La Russa noted. "He had a day off yesterday. He's ready to go."
