Renteria Not Himself

Edgar Renteria isn't hitting the ball with his usual authority lately. Entering Thursday afternoon's game, he was in a 9-for-43 slide and had one RBI in his previous seven games. Renteria will likely get a day off in Montreal.
"This is definitely not his game," La Russa said. "He's not embarrassing himself or stinking up the joint, but he's not having consistently real good at-bats. What happens is, when you're not playing well, the game wears on you."
La Russa pondered giving Renteria the day off on Thursday, but he wanted to take advantage of a rare opportunity for the shortstop to bat against a left-handed pitcher.
