Baseball Player Elected As Athlete Of Year In Colombia

BOGOTA, Nov. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Colombian baseball player Edgar Renteria, who plays in the US major leagues, was honoured on Friday as the "athlete of the year" by Colombian weekly sports magazine El Espectador.

Renteria was selected after a voting among readers and the staff of the magazine.

The baseball player, who this year won the Gold Glove and the Silver Slugger of the National Baseball League of the United States, was the athlete who best represented Colombia abroad, according to El Espectador.

Cyclist Hugo Pena was in the second place, who wore the yellow shirt of leader in the Tour de France, while the third position went to the boxing world champion Irene Pacheco.

Formula One pilot Juan Pablo Montoya, received a special mention for his third position in this year's season.

The coach of the Colombian national under-17 soccer team Eduardo Lara, was termed as the best trainer of the year because of the fourth place his team won for Colombian in the Finland World Cup of the category.
