St. Louis - Edgar Renteria had four hits and five RBIs, and Woody Williams rebounded from his worst start of the year to combine on a three-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals routed the Milwaukee Brewers 13-0 Thursday night.

The Cardinals won three of four against the Brewers but remained five games behind Houston, the NL Central leader, with eight games to go. The Cardinals host the Astros in a three-game series starting Friday night.

St. Louis finished the season series 11-3 against Milwaukee.

Williams (16-9) set a career best for victories, topping his 15-win season in 2001 for the Padres and Cardinals. He allowed three hits in seven innings, struck out six and walked two. Steve Kline and Josh Pearce each worked a hitless inning of relief.

In his previous outing on Sept. 12, Williams allowed nine runs in 3 2-3 innings during a 14-5 loss at Houston. Before Thursday, he had been 1-6 with a 6.08 ERA in his previous 10 outings.

Williams worked out of his only jam in the second, leaving the bases loaded. He fell behind 3-1 on pitcher Matt Kinney before getting an inning-ending groundout on a 3-2 pitch.

Renteria was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two singles and a walk. He had an RBI single in the fifth, an RBI double in the seventh and a three-run double in the eighth to tie his career best.

He also hit his 46th double in the seventh, reaching a career high, and scored on Renteria's double.

Eduardo Perez hit a three-run homer in a five-run fifth off Kinney (10-12) as the Cardinals made it 7-0.

Kinney lasted 4 2-3 innings, giving up seven runs and 10 hits with seven strikeouts and five walks. In his last three starts, Kinney has surrendered 17 runs in 14 2-3 innings.
