A Castillo-Renteria Reunion?

ST. LOUIS - Luis Castillo's first choice is to remain with the Marlins in 2004 and beyond. His second? Rejoining his best friend.

A free agent at season's end, Castillo is all for reprising his role as Edgar Renteria's double-play partner. The two played together in the Marlins' system and in the majors for parts of three seasons until Renteria was traded to the Cardinals before the 1999 campaign.

"Of course," Castillo said, of whether he'd enjoy turning two with Renteria again. "If something happens and I can't play here, you never know. I would like to sign for three years and be on a good team. If a team like St. Louis gives me an opportunity I'd be happy because I'll be playing with one of my best friends.

"We were here with the Marlins a couple of seasons, and with the experience he has and what I have, I think it's time for us to be together again."

The idea likely appeals to the Cardinals, but they may not be able to afford to make it happen. Fernando Vina is in the final season of a three-year, $15 million deal. The Cardinals have a $4.5 million option for 2004, but they are expected to exercise a $1 million buyout.

Since pitching will be the offseason priority, the Cardinals may decide to stay with rookie Bo Hart at second. Not only has he played exceptional defense and hit .318 through his first 41 games, Hart won't make much more than the $300,000 major league minimum next season.

That's important, considering slugger Albert Pujols is arbitration-eligible for the first time and due a substantial raise.

"If Fernando's not here, I'd like to play with Luis," Renteria said. "I'd give [Castillo] the best recommendation of his life. ... We talk every day, and we're the same friends. St. Louis would benefit him. It's a city that loves its players, and he's a winning player. I think they would love him here."
