Renteria Is Dragging

Typically the Cardinals' yardstick for consistency, shortstop Edgar Renteria endured a difficult trip capped by a one-for-17 series against the Cubs and a bobbled infield single that contributed to Wednesday's game-winning eighth-inning rally. Renteria finished the trip five for 28.
Renteria is fighting his most profound slump of the season. After Thursday's game, he's in a one-for-20 funk with eight strikeouts and one RBI. Before this week's decline, Renteria had struck out only twice in his previous 74 at-bats. The Cubs series dropped his average from .334 to .325, tying his season low of July 22. "Yeah, I'm tired. Everybody's tired," Renteria said. "But it's September. It's time to push."
La Russa, noting that Renteria has appeared in a team-high 138 games, a staggering number for a shortstop, said: "I think right now he's played out. If these last four days had been against somebody else, he would have gotten a day (off). But I'm going to try to find a day for him this weekend."
