Renteria Returns

Dan O'Neill Post-Dispatch
August 26, 2003

Cardinals shortstop Edgar Renteria, who is recovering from backs spasms, missed Tuesday's series opener against the Cubs and was not in the original lineup posted by Tony La Russa on Wednesday. But after taking ground balls and batting practice, Renteria said he wanted to play, and he was a late addition to the lineup.

"He came and said he was feeling better," said La Russa, who was happy to have back Renteria's .332 average and 78 runs batted in. "You have to be smart about it, because you don't want him to try it, tweak it and then be out for two weeks. We'd be done.

"But he's such a prince of a player. He wants to be in there."

Renteria said before the game, "I want to play. I was able to take a full swing and everything was fine."
