ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Edgar Renteria is just as valuable with the glove as he is with the bat.
Renteria made a superb defensive play to help preserve the lead in the seventh inning and contributed three hits and three RBI, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to an 11-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Among the National League's leading hitters, Renteria also is a Gold Glove shortstop. His defense in this one proved to be huge. With the Cardinals clinging to a 5-4 lead in the seventh, the Blue Jays had two runners on with one out. Frank Catalanotto grounded a ball that looked like it was headed for left field but Renteria made a diving stop and threw to second for a forceout.
Matt Morris (7-3) followed by getting Vernon Wells to pop out, ending the inning.
Sparked by Renteria's big defensive play, the Cardinals scored four times in the bottom of the inning. Renteria also came through at the plate with a two-run single in the eighth.
Morris improved to 6-1 in his last eight starts despite allowing four runs and nine hits in seven innings. The righthander struck out four without a walk.
Blue Jays starter Kelvim Escobar (2-3) surrendered five runs and six hits in six innings.
